Meet Author Sam Woodgarth

Sam Woodgarth, a retired teacher, spends her days wrangling cats and talking to her imaginary friends. No, you didn’t misread that. But don’t worry, she’s not crazy, just a creative soul who grew up immersed in fairytales, myths, and legends.

Sam was devastated when she realised reality didn’t match the fictional worlds she read about. So, she did what any sane person would: she created her own worlds where the good guys always win, and the bad guys get their just desserts.

Flambé style.

Sam is all about courage, honour, and wisdom, and she refuses to accept a world where fear, selfishness, and idiocy rule the day. Sam writes stories that speak to the unloved and dispossessed. Social justice is the lifeblood of her work. She’s all about belonging and compassion, and she believes that we’re one step closer to creating a better world if we can imagine a place where gender, religion, ethnicity, and age are accepted without question.

Originally from rainy Manchester, UK, Sam moved to Cairns, Far North Queensland, in search of her tribe.  She found them in her writers’ group, where she champions fellow authors and helps them find their authentic voices.

Who Is Author Sam?

My earliest friends were twelve white rabbits. Six boys in blue waistcoats, and six girls in pink pinafores. Before you get your knickers in a knot about gender stereotypes, I was three years old, and doubtless influenced by Beatrix Potter’s delightful anthropomorphic...

Why Do You Write?

Writers get this question all the time. Usually accompanied by a puzzled frown. The questioner is often poised for flight. Who knows what demons they may have roused by asking such searching questions. This is, mayhap, the simplest or the most complicated question an...

Women In Fantasy

Tired of female characters in fantasy who exist only as targets of male aggression, or to demonstrate the evil and conniving nature of women? (Think Game of Thrones.)  Yeah, me too. Western culture, based on Judaeo-Christian values and literature, has traditionally...
